Work treatment or working therapy. There is no need to be afraid of it, it is a balsam to the soul for all the people in senior age who lack the feeling of usefulness. And not just that. It is also a procedure of therapeutic physical exercise that uses work for gaining certain skills in the cases of motor functions, psychical, cognitive functions and speech disorders. While performing this therapy our rehabilitation nurse Zuzana Košická focuses mainly on the training of hands and forearms, but also on the training of head, nape, chest and spine, which depends on the disability itself. An ageing person has to face various health problems, meaning mainly a reduction of bone and muscle tissues, mobility limitation, a reaction slowdown, a decline of senses perception ability and, of course, of cognitive functions, which alone causes enormous pressure, accompanied by frustration and often also by depressive moods, on a senior. A fear of psychical and physical decline is very pressing, it becomes an everyday part of thoughts, which has a negative impact on the process of self-reflection and on the attitude towards life as well. The mental and physical decline of these very elderly in this state of resignation is much faster. Ergotherapy is a therapy of motor-intelectual functions and of social abilities aiming to achieve indepence in personal and social life. It is apllied to seniors after stroke, with Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s disease, with dementia, multiple sclerosis, degenerative rheumatic diseases and with other diagnoses.
