Looking back to history, we will find surprising facts. Until the 19th century was the average life expectancy just 30 years, but during the 19th century it has increased to 50 years. This had been caused mainly by the progress in medicine and improvement of hygiene conditions. Nowadays the life expectancy significantly varies with the quality of life. The lowest life expectancy is in Africa, where the average age is just 51 years. On the contrary, the highest average age of almost 84 years is in the little state Andorra.

Every stage of a human life—from birth until death—should be considered as a natural and inevitable part of life. There is a recipe for the old age: it consists of different aspects, such as right living, exercise, nutritious food, avoiding stressful situations, modified psychohygiene, starting in the younger age.

The old age deals with the problem of proper caretaking, and what is also important, of social program. In the past, seniors have been taken care of by their children, often until they died. However, the times have changed. Not only are people more active and busier than before, but taking care of the oldest family member is conditioned by many factors, the rising retirement age, for example, and not everyone is able to take care of their grandparents. That is the reason why senior and social services establishments are being established, where seniors are provided with professional care, and a trained personnel dedicates their time, experiences, patience and understanding to them.
